John Sidney McCain III (1936–2018) was a prominent U.S. Senator and Representative from Arizona who served 18 U.S. Congresses. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, McCain was a Navy pilot and prisoner of war in Vietnam, receiving several honors for his service. He served in the House from 1983 to 1987 and the Senate from 1987 to 2018. McCain chaired key Senate committees, was the Republican nominee for President in 2008, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 2022.
