Lamar Alexander served as a U.S. Senator from Tennessee from January 3, 2003, to January 3, 2021. Prior to his Senate career, he was the Governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1987 and served as U.S. Secretary of Education under President George H. W. Bush from 1991 to 1993. Alexander also ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 1996 and 2000. He announced he would not seek re-election in 2020. Alexander was known for his work on education, energy, and healthcare policy, serving as Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee during his time in office.
