Richard Mauze Burr is an American businessman and politician who served as a U.S. Senator from North Carolina from 2005 to 2023. Before serving in the Senate, he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for North Carolina's 5th District from 1995 to 2005. Burr was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1955. He married Brooke F. Burr in 1984, and they have two children: William Burr and Tyler Burr. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1978 and attended R.J. Reynolds High School, graduating in 1974.
